Maths/English/IT skills courses

What is it?

These are often called Skills for Life qualifications and they are designed to help you develop the skills you need in everyday life, such as reading, writing, maths or IT. They can also help you boost your CV or to move on to further study. They are aimed at people over 16 years of age who have left compulsory education and do not have an up-to-date English or maths qualification at level 2. To find out which level of Skills for Life qualification might be right for you try a mini test online.

Where could I study?

You can study for these qualifications at most local colleges and adult education centres. You can also find a local test centre that offers the National Certificates in Adult Literacy and Numeracy.

How long will it take me?

If you are already working at level 1 or level 2 you can find a local test centre and take a test. If you decide to go to college to brush up on your skills course you can often start with a short introductory course.

Options after the course?

Skills for Life qualifications are based on national standards, so everyone, including potential employers, can see what you're capable of. They can give you more confidence in your own abilities, boost your CV and help you get onto other courses.
