Alternatives to Full time HE Study

This section will explore the resources that are available to help you talk to your learners about the alternatives to full time HE study. We list useful external websites focusing on part time study, distance learning, work based learning, and finally higher and degree apprenticeships. At the bottom of the page you will then see external resources available to download covering a variety of alternatives to HE study.

Here you can search for part time and distance learning courses by region.

Birkbeck is London’s specialist provider of evening Higher Education, they have a part time and full time evening provision.

ICS Learn offer a range of online distance learning courses catering to different needs, interests and ambitions.

The Open University is the biggest provider of HE by distance learning. Their courses generally have no entry requirements, and no upper age limit. 

There are also a number of HEIs that offer online courses. Below we have listed these for you to look at. 

Derby offers a wide range of online courses within the following subject areas: Accounting, Business, Computing & IT, Environmental Sciences, Finance, Health and Social Care, Hospitality, Law, Management and Psychology

Online Undergraduate Degrees at Essex are available in Law, Business, Marketing and Criminology. University of Essex Online courses are delivered by Kaplan Open Learning (Essex) Limited, an experienced online learning provider.

The only Undergraduate programme on offer is the Occupational Safety, Health and Environment, BSc Hons (top-up).

Leicester offers degrees, Certificates of Higher Education and Foundation Degrees through its distance learning programme. Degrees are available in Ancient History, Archaeology, Human Resources and Risk Management. Foundation Degrees are available in Drug and Alcohol Counselling and Risk management.  Certificates and Diplomas of Higher Education are available in: Ancient History, Archaeology, Global Ecology and Wildlife Conservation and Human Resources.

The following subjects are offered at Undergraduate Degree level: Law, Management, and Tennis Coaching Management. Occupational Health & Safety is also available for distance learners as a National Certificate or Diploma.

Resource Development International, based in Coventry (RDI), has partnered with three UK universities –Anglia Ruskin University, Bradford University School of Management and the University of Sunderland, to deliver online distance learning courses. RDI offer degrees in Business, Management, Computing, Law, Graphic Design, Psychology and Health & Social Care. Higher National Diplomas are available in Business, Tourism and Computing.

Originally part of RDI, Arden University started in August 2015 as a specialist online university, offering Higher Education qualifications through their university partners, as well as awarding their own degrees. Subjects include LLB Law, Accounting, Business, Marketing, Computing and Psychology.

Online undergraduate degrees offered in Information Technology, Computer Science and Business Administration. Hertfordshire specialise in industry-relevant courses. Tutor support and administrative support is available.

Distance learning undergraduate degrees include Interior Design, Computing, Motorsport Engineering and Social Welfare Law. Staffordshire use virtual learning environment software ‘Blackboard’, which provides learners with connections to other students and support groups.

The University of London International distance learning programme offers degrees in subjects such as Accounting, History and Computing. UK students are eligible for this flexible learning programme, which provides a University of London accredited degree wherever learners are studying in the UK.

Many opportunities for undergraduate distance learning are available at Anglia Ruskin, including degrees in Sales, Management, Law, Business and Psychology. Their Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), gives access a range of study resources, online workshops and discussion boards. In addition, Tutors are on hand to offer regular feedback and advice.

Offer a distance learning degree in Psychology. Students are supported through Moodle and the student portal UELDirect.

Includes a number of resources on studying HE in the workplace.

The University of Greenwich runs an Applied Professional Studies programme aimed at learners in the workplace, including Foundation Degrees and Undergraduate qualifications, as well as a short introductory 15 credit Building on Competence course. 

The University of Greenwich have developed GetAhead aimed at work-based learners, and offers advice on progression via a mobile-friendly platform.

At Middlesex University the Institute for Work Based Learning offers a range of Professional Practice and Work Based Learning Studies programme from Level 4 – Level 6, including an introductory 40 credit University Certificate. 

Provides a first taste of work-based learning via working and learning; developing an effective performance at-work programme, which on successful completion can lead onto a range of Foundation Degrees and Degrees.
